What is Fistula-in-ano?
Fistula-in-ano is a communicating track between the anal canal and the surrounding skin surface of the perineum. Initially there will be an abscess near to the anus opening, if not treated properly may burst out spontaneously to form a sinus. That neglected sinus or inadequate treatment to the sinus may end with the formation of a fistula-in ano. There will be frequent pus or blood mixed discharge off and on. This is a difficult and recurrent surgical disease. If any one claims to cure by medicine is a simple exploitation.
The diagnosis is based on an examination of the perineum and anal canal by digital examination and probing. If the history is more than six months or it is operated previously it may need a MRI evaluation to conform the extension of the track. Nearly 86 out of one lakh adults will have fistula-in-ano.

What are the symptoms of Fistula-in-Ano?
The signs and symptoms of an anal fistula include:
- Frequent anal abscesses
- Pain and swelling around the anus
- Bloody or foul-smelling discharge (pus) from an opening around the anus. The pain may decrease after the fistula drains.
- Irritation of the skin around the anus from drainage
- Pain with bowel movements
- Bleeding
- Fever, chills and a general feeling of fatigue
- Itching around the anus
