There is a myth intake of sweet causes Diabetes. But according to Ayurveda the prime causes of Ayurveda are intake of heavy, oily (Fatty), sour taste and salt in excess. Food made of new grain, hybrid paddy, Basumati rice, black gram cause Diabetes. Any food made of powder of cereals (wheat and paddy) and pulses (green gram, peas, Bengal gram) are 8 times heavier than grains. Excessive induction of Vamana, Virechana, Anuvasana basti, Niruha basti and Nasya cause diabetes. Holding the urge of stool, urine, flatus, hunger and thirst may cause Diabetes. A person indulged with frequent sitting, lying down or sleeping may get a Diabetes. Habitual delayed sleeping habit may cause Diabetes. Sugarcane products, milk products cause diabetes if calorie input and out ratio is disturbed.
A person having a greedy craze towards food causes Diabetes. Surprising to know distraction to regular bath may cause Diabetes or Madhumeha. Avoiding walking may cause diabetes.
Myths about Diabetes
- Bitter food or medicine can cure diabetes. Fact: – Excessive intake of Astringent, hot (Chilly), bitter, dry and rough, light and chilled food cause Diabetes.
- Exercise cures Diabetes. Fact: – Excessive exercise cause Diabetes.
- Wheat is good for Diabetes. Fact:- Wheat is not bad for Diabetes, but it should be taken in form of whole grain (Dalia). Wheat flour is 8 times heavier than wheat grains. Along with glycemic index we should have focus over glycemic load too.
- Paddy is bad for Diabetes patient. Fact:- Ayurveda says paddy is the best cereal. Rice from paddy should be taken in traditional way. Paddy or wheat, both should be stored in a closed room for 1 year. It helps seasoning. After 1 year paddy should be boiled 2 times and then dried under a roof. Then it should be milled and used for food. Boiled brown rice is much better than white rice and wheat. The black rice of Odisha is the best rice for Diabetes patient. It has the lowest glycemic index and highest fibre content.
- Control of blood glucose level is control of Diabetes. Fact:- Diabetes treatment is just not sugar management. Diabetes treatment is reorganisation of the digestive system and metabolism process.
Diabetes Symptoms
According to Ayurveda the symptoms of Diabetes are excessive and frequent urination. Urine does not look clear rather it looks like mixed with some soluble materials. There are some prodromal symptoms which precede the cardinal symptoms. Sticky hair, Sweetness of mouth, numbness and burning sensation in hands and legs, dryness of oral cavity and throat, litharge or laziness, deposition of wastes in nose, ear, eye and tongue, peripheral burning sensation, sleepiness, drowsiness, body odour etc are observed before the onset of Diabetes.
Diabetes Complications
Excessive thirst, loose motion, fever, burning sensation, weakness, decreased interest in food, indigestion, diabetic carbuncle, diabetic food ulcer, abscess are the possible complications of Diabetes. According to Ayurveda, the most dangerous complication of diabetes is cardiac arrest. The indigestion leads to mental stress and physical constipation. It gives rise to Diabetic Nephropathy, Neuropathy, Retinopathy, Osteopathy, Cardiopathy etc.
Ayurveda Food Habit
Millets, 1 Year old rice, bird’s meat, moong dal (green gram), point gourd (Parval/potala), ridge gourd (Taroi/Janhi), Bitter gourd (Karela/Kalara), bottle gourd (lauki/lau), spine gourd (kheksa/kankada), drumstick (muringa/sajana chuin) are ideally advised for diabetes patients. It is better to avoid underground shoots.
Mustard oil and flax seed oil are best advised for diabetes patients. Recently it has been appreciated and approved by National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad.
Intake of Triphala, dalchin (Cardamom) and methi (fenugreek) are helpful.
Diabetes Exercise
Morning brisk walking is the best exercise for Diabetes. Running or jugging is not required. That may cause injury to the knee joint. Evening brisk walking is not advised. That may cause spine compression (PIVD) and sciatica. The amount of exercise is mentioned in Ayurveda. It should be 50% of your capacity.
Diabetes Preventive Care
Diabetes can be prevented by adopting active lifestyle. Regular exercise and physical activity round the day can keep fit. This is the responsibility of a common man.
