Pancha Karma treatment means five treatments those include Vaman, Virechan, Anuvasan basti, Asthapan basti and Nasya Karma associated with many other ancillary treatments. All these treatments look very simple. Of course they are simple as they are achieved through the natural path. Obviously they are practiced in many Ayurvedic hospitals. But point to be noted: it is not important just, to perform pancha karma, it is important to eliminate toxin, cure disease, not to create another disease or complication and perform pancha Karma with proper traditional and scientific guidelines.
Asthapana Basti
Asthapana basti is one of the five pancha karma treatments and two types of basti. Asthapana basti with the other one (i.e. Anubasan Vasti) is considered to be the half of the total Pancha karma treatment. Basically this is a medicated herbal decoction enema administered through the anus. This vasti settles down the vitiated Vata dosha. This treatment is indicated in case of all types of nerve diseases and joint disorders like paralysis, motor neuron disease(MND), parkinsonism, sciatica, rheumatism, arthritis, PIVD, spondylosis etc. Other than these abdominal discomfort, gout, seminal disease, bowel insufficiency, kidney stone, amenorrhoea can be managed by vasti treatment. Traditional practice of Asthapan Vasti is regularly performed at Astang Ayurveda Hospital.
Asthapana basti rehabilitates the Vata dosha and settles down the strength of the nerves, muscles. In toto it settles down the strength of the patient. This total process of settlement and rehabilitation is called “Sthapan” in Sanskrit. That is why this vasti is called Asthapana Basti. It is dry by nature. That is why it is followed by Anuvasana Basti which is snigdha (oily) by nature. The total number of vastis are variable by number like 8, 15, 30 etc depending upon the disease and patient.
